Where's 802.11 Heading? Most spread-spectrum products support raw transmission speeds of 2 Mbps. With radio and packet overhead, the most efficient products provide effective throughput at around 1.4 Mbps. That will change later this year when the IEEE is expected to complete work on a 10-Mbps standard. The current 2.4-GHz high-speed wireless standard being refined by the IEEE is based on direct-sequence radio designs.
