Bridging the Gap Although we have not directly addressed them in this article, point-to-point and point-to-multipoint bridges that let you connect two LANs using wireless technology are available from most vendors. The underlying radio and bridging technology is virtually identical to the systems we discussed above.
These systems are extremely popular as campus or metropolitan-area-network replacements for T1 lines. Some vendors support distances as far as 25 miles. While the danger of interference from another unlicensed radio installation is always a threat, the payback period for these units can be fairly short. Many ISPs are beginning to evaluate multipoint wireless solutions as a technology for interconnecting businesses within a metropolitan area. As the speed of these devices increases, it's likely to become a hot market.
