In Perspective: Java Development Environments We tested four leading Java-requested IDEs (integrated development environments) and found that support for the latest Java technology and team development is a must if you're looking to adopt. Somewhat less important are price and inclusion of non-standard components. For development on Win32 platforms, Symantec Corp.'s Visual Café was our choice; in the lab, it offered excellent usability, though it lacked stability. If you're seeking an enterprise-class development environment with multiplatform support and aggressive features, such as Enterprise JavaBeans and Servlets, IBM Corp.'s VisualAge for Java may be for you. We also found that Microsoft Corp.'s Visual J++, with its strong ActiveX support, is a worthy contender if you're developing specifically for the Microsoft platform. And if you're looking to get the job done without a hefty investment, InfinityEdge Systems' JaWiz is an economical entry-level IDE for small- and medium-sized projects.
