LAN Traffic Uses LANE To Travel ATM A method that's gaining popularity for sending LAN traffic over ATM is LANE (LAN Emulation). LANE, as defined by the ATM Forum, provides a standard way to send Ethernet or token-ring frames over ATM. A 2-byte LANE header is added to the beginning of an Ethernet or token-ring frame before being presented to AAL 5 (ATM Adaptation Layer 5) and segmented into multiple 53-byte cells. All the ATM analyzers we tested recognize LANE cells and reassemble them back into LAN packets. The 2-byte LANE header is stripped and the remainder of the packet beginning with the very first byte in the destination address in Ethernet or Access Control field in token ring, is decoded layer by layer just like a traditional LAN protocol analyzer.
