How We Tested We tested the ATM analyzers at OC-3, or 155.520 Mbps, a common data rate used for most ATM backbones. Each ATM analyzer was tested by placing the unit in line between a set of token-ring switches with an ATM backbone and capturing cells in both directions from the full-duplex fiber connection. Our switches were operating as a single ELAN (emulated LAN) in an ATM LANE (LAN Emulation) environment. ATM LANE control cells as well as data cells were captured and analyzed. We captured several data transfers between an NT workstation and NT server over the ATM backbone in order to compare LANE cell reassembly for decoding from the IP layer up. For our testing of the DominoGigabit analyzer, we used a Gigabit Ethernet traffic generator from Ixia Communications. This traffic generator accommodates multiple Ethernet transmission rates (10, 100 and 1000 Mbps) and protocol simulation, and can send packets over the full Ethernet packet range of 64 to 1,518 bytes up to gigabit wire speed.
